Philosophy

About the Program

Philosophy is the study of the fundamental problems and questions concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing these questions by its critical and systematic approach and its reliance on reason and arguments. The word philosophy comes from the Greek [philosophia], which literally translates to "love of wisdom."

At CLC, philosophy is a transfer program housed in the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts Division. Transfer programs are for students who plan to continue their education at a four-year college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree. Some students take philosophy courses to fulfill the humanities and fine arts requirement for a transfer degree. Others take philosophy as part of a plan to major in philosophy. Many students take philosophy courses as electives.
