CLC Tobacco, Smoke, and Vape-Free Policy

This policy applies to all campuses; Grayslake, Southlake and Lakeshore campuses, and it includes everyone coming on our campuses-- faculty, staff, students, employees, contractors, visitors, guests, and anyone else.

  • To Protect Our Health

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. and in Illinois. Each year, about 440,000 die in the U.S. from tobacco-related causes, 18,300 of them in Illinois alone. Based on current rates, it is projected that nationwide more than one million current college students will die from tobacco use.
  • To Promote Student Success

    — Helping students become tobacco-free may improve their job prospects in a highly competitive employment market. More employers are passing tobacco-free hiring policies.
  • To Lower Institutional Costs

  • To Support CLC’s Sustainability Initiative

A tobacco-free environment contains less pollution.
  • To Comply with the Law

Secondhand Smoke Facts

Secondhand Smoke Facts

Tobacco use is a legal product for adults. However, the State of Illinois has passed a law, and CLC has passed a policy banning it on our campuses for the purpose of reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, decreasing litter, and increasing wellness at CLC.

  • Secondhand smoke kills 53,000 non-smoking Americans every year.
  • Secondhand smoke contains more than 43 cancer-causing agents and many other toxins, including formaldehyde, cyanide, carbon monoxide and arsenic.
  • Secondhand smoke exposure causes heart disease and lung cancer in adults and respiratory problems in children.
  • There is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke exposure; even brief exposure adversely affects the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
  • Secondhand smoke can trigger immediate health effects for people with asthma, allergies, COPD or other medical conditions.

  • The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a statement saying that the use of e-cigarettes is unsafe for kids, teens, and young adults.
  • Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine. Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm the developing brain, which continues into the early to mid-20s.
  • E-cigarettes can contain the following substances:
    • Nicotine
    • Ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs
    • Flavorings such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to a serious lung disease
    • Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s)
    • Cancer-causing chemicals
    • Heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead
  • Young people who use e-cigarettes may be more likely to smoke cigarettes in the future.
  • Long-term damage to the lungs can be caused by some of the ingredients in e-cigarette aerosol.
  • Defective e-cigarette batteries have caused some fires and explosions, a few of which have resulted in serious injuries.
  • Children and adults have been poisoned by swallowing, breathing, or absorbing e-cigarette liquid through their skin or eyes. Nationally, approximately 50% of calls to poison control centers for e-cigarettes are for kids 5 years of age or younger.
  • The aerosol that users inhale and exhale from e-cigarettes can expose both themselves and bystanders to harmful substances.
