There are more than 4,000 species of native bees in North America. Both native bees (which do not produce honey) and honeybees (which do) collect and transport pollen, fertilizing flowering plants and leading to formation of fruit, vegetables and seeds for new plants. Butterflies and beetles also perform the service of pollinating plants.

Students in our Sustainable Agriculture program tend these hives and harvest gallons of honey which is used by Café Willow and available for purchase in LancerZone Stores. Honey bees and native pollinators keep our prairie plants healthy and pollinate crops on the farm.

Bees are so important to farming that international aid groups provide apiaries and beekeeper training to impoverished communities throughout the world. The introduction of a single colony of bees can double local fruit and vegetable yields, enabling families to grow enough food to feed themselves and sell the surplus.
